Choosing Stone

How to Choose Kitchen Countertops

Custom kitchen countertops start with the right stone. The best choice comes down to how you cook, how much care you want to give the surface, and the look you love. Here is how our stones compare in everyday use.

Hard · Heat Tolerant

Granite countertops

Hard, heat tolerant and available in the widest range of colors, from speckled classics to exotic patterns. A periodic seal keeps it resisting stains.

Granite countertops

Marble Look · Harder

Quartzite countertops

A natural stone that often looks like marble but is much harder. Great for busy kitchens when you want soft veining. Seal it like granite.

Quartzite countertops

Classic Veining · Softer

Marble countertops

Timeless veining and a cool surface bakers love. Marble is softer and can etch from acids like lemon juice, so it suits homeowners who are fine with a lived-in patina.

Marble countertops

Dense · No Sealing

Soapstone countertops

Soft to the touch, dense and heat resistant. It does not need sealing, and scratches can be sanded or oiled out.

Soapstone countertops

Backlit · Quick to Install

Translucent stone and prefabricated countertops

Translucent slabs of onyx, quartzite and other natural stones let light glow through, so they can be backlit for bars and feature pieces. Prefabricated countertops are quick and easy to install, saving time and money on a kitchen or bath remodel.

Slab Yard vs. Showroom

Why Shop a Slab Yard for Countertops in San Diego

A showroom shows you small samples. A slab yard shows you the real inventory. At Brazilian Exotic Granite you walk aisles of full slabs, compare them side by side and tag the exact pieces for your project, so there are no surprises on install day.

We import our stone directly. Our buyers select blocks at quarries in Brazil and beyond, which is why our yards carry exotic colors you will not find at typical retail showrooms, at wholesale-to-the-public prices.

Homeowners, designers, fabricators and contractors all shop here. We supply the slabs; your fabricator or contractor handles fabrication and installation.

Questions

Countertop FAQs

What is the best countertop material for a kitchen?
It depends on how you cook and the look you want. Granite is the all-around workhorse, quartzite gives a marble look with more hardness, marble suits bakers and classic designs if you accept some patina, and soapstone shrugs off heat and does not need sealing.
Can I pick the exact slab for my countertops?
Yes. You walk our slab yard, compare full slabs side by side, and tag the exact pieces your countertops are cut from. What you choose is what gets installed.
Do you fabricate and install countertops?
We supply the slabs. Fabrication and installation are handled by your fabricator or contractor. If you do not have one yet, our team can point you in the right direction.
Do I need an appointment to shop for countertops?
No. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours. Scheduling a visit means a stone expert can pull specific slabs and walk the yard with you.
Which location has the most countertop slabs?
San Marcos is our largest yard, with 10,000+ slabs in stock. Our San Diego yard on Camino Ruiz, off Miramar Road, is closest for the city and south county. Both share the same direct-import pricing and hours.
